The Millions Losing Their Benefits in Silence
Democrats and Republicans are equally to blame for the ceasing of unemployment payments to Americans struggling through a pandemic
Last Monday, the richest nation on Earth allowed millions of Americans already down on their luck to find themselves in much more dire circumstances as federally funded emergency unemployment programs came to an end.
In what has been described as one of the largest and most abrupt ends to government aid in U.S. history, more than seven million people have lost all of their benefits, with an additional nearly three million more losing a $300 weekly boost to their state unemployment benefits. Half the states — nearly all led by Republican governors — had already ended the federal benefits based on the premise that assistance discouraged people from working. That’s the kind of mindset of people who don’t know anything, which regrettably describes far too many elected officials.
Enter Sen. Ted Cruz, who in a tweet on Monday night responded to the Associated Press story titled “Jobless Americans have few options as benefits expire” by saying, “Um, get a job? There are millions of vacancies, and small businesses across the Nation are desperate for workers.”
