Republican Party

In LEVEL. More on Medium.

Forget bipartisan politics, it’s time for Biden to get real about preventing the return of Jim Crow

When a political party has made a coup d’état its sole policy objective, the opposing party should respond in kind. This concept has seemingly been a notion difficult for Democrats, known on a national level, to retain. Thankfully, there are the braver, bolder, more creative local state officials in places like Texas providing a blueprint on how to not merely pontificate about the importance of democracy on cable television, but actually fight in support of it.

On Monday, Democratic lawmakers in the Texas legislature left the state in what is undoubtedly their final attempt to prevent Republicans from passing new…

I don’t want to disrespect my elders, but ‘Do you want to die in your seat?’ is a valid question

Earlier this month, James Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives presently serving as the majority whip, responded to a question about keeping his job the way you would expect many active 80-year-old Black men to.

“Not just yes,” he told the Post and Courier as to whether he’ll be seeking reelection. “But hell yes.”

The author of books such as Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black — also known for playing a very active role in the civil rights movement — knows how to make his position clear.

Considering Clyburn’s role in helping to salvage Joe Biden’s…

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appears to be a GOP favorite to attempt to continue the former president’s brand of tyranny in 2024

We might not have to wait for a few federal indictments for the political dethronement of Donald Trump.

In a new straw poll conducted last weekend, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis bested former President Donald Trump as conservatives’ choice for president in 2024. The poll, conducted at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver, resulted in DeSantis pulling a 74% approval rate compared to Trump’s 71%. As for the other wannabe GOP presidential nominees, the rest of the top five included Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who came in third with 43%, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with 39%, and Sen…

Republicans seek to rewrite history in public school curriculums while whitewashing systemic racism and riling up the GOP base

Last week, the Nevada Family Alliance suggested that teachers in the Washoe County School District wear body cameras to ensure that they’re not teaching critical race theory to students. I’m surprised they didn’t also suggest dogs be trained to sniff out signs of White guilt. Maybe at the next school board meeting?

“Creating a record that could be viewed by appropriate parties, if necessary, might be the best way to urge teachers to stick to traditional teaching,” said Karen England, executive director and founder of the Nevada Family Alliance, in a statement released last Wednesday.

“We expect that the teachers’…

And as Republicans sink even lower, we have to take him seriously

In the coming years, Representative Matt Gaetz is likely to be the inspiration for another Lifetime docuseries themed around sexual predators (or at least have a Law & Order: SVU episode based on his current scandal). But that apparently has not deterred his political ambitions at all. Not only has the Florida congressman not resigned from his job while in the midst of allegations of sex trafficking a minor, Gaetz believes he can make it all the way to the White House. When I say mighty, you say white.

I hate that I even have to mildly take this sad…

4. The Cheney Gang

Okay, maybe naming the GOP’s would-be splinter group after Republicana non grata Liz Cheney invites some phonetic similarities to forced prison labor. But hey, if the 1995 effort to bring that reviled practice back to Florida fits, you just might need to wear it.

Well, hey, someone has finally attempted to shake themselves free of the Cheeto-hued monstrosity! Now we’ve got a question for you: What’s orange cream without the orange? Just one flavor — if you can even call it that. Might as well just lean into the blandness.

For four years now, a long list of military leaders…

If the congresswoman really cared about democracy, she never would have supported Trump in the first place

In her last days as GOP conference chair, Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney wrote in an op-ed for the Washington Post, “The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution.”

Cheney was referencing what is known as “the big lie” about election fraud and chastising Republicans for joining Donald Trump and the conservative media ecosystem that caters to his ego by furthering the lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. …

The former vice president’s preliminary campaigning for a 2024 run is a waste of time and energy

Photo: Sean Rayford/Getty Images

It’s almost adorable that Mike Pence is even bothering to tease a presidential bid, much less one in 2024.

The former vice president — who had to run for cover back in January as a violent mob of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol seeking his head due to his failure to help the ex-president steal an election based on a lie about Black voters — is doing the sort of things that politicians do to tease a White House run. Pence visited the state of South Carolina, which has often played a deciding factor in the presidential primary seasons…

This Week in Racism

It’s an embarrassment of riches in our weekly roundup of the world’s most preventable disease!

Photo Illustration: Save As/Medium; Source: Getty Images

Death and taxes used to be the only two certainties in life. But no matter how much progress it feels like we’re making sometimes, the sad fact is you can probably slide racism into that list. Are we in a moment of uprising that feels like it has the potential to create real, systemic change? Yes. Do people and organizations still show their ass on a daily basis? Oh, most definitely. And to keep tabs on all that ass-showing, we created a weekly racism surveillance machine. …
