Joe Biden Is Already Losing Support for a Second Term
Two new polls highlight the president’s early chances for reelection are ever-slimming
In March, President Biden tried to put aside doubt that he intended to be a one-term president. “The answer is yes, my plan is to run for reelection,” Biden said at his first presidential news conference. “That’s my expectation.”
Biden was asked this because he was sworn in office at age 78, making him both the oldest newly inaugurated U.S. president in history and the oldest sitting president ever. There was also reporting during the 2020 presidential campaign that Biden not only signaled to aides that he would only serve one term, but that he might even make a public pledge. That pledge never came (it would have been foolish to give Donald Trump such ammunition anyway), but it didn’t take long for reporters to ask whether Biden planned to extend his run as president well into his eighties.
Biden may have sought to stop speculation about his plans for a second term in the spring by revealing his “expectation,” but new polling suggests that the public may be ready to put him into political retirement regardless of his intention.
