‘I Travel With Armed Guards. It Is What It Is.’
George Floyd’s family attorney on fear, police brutality, and the dangers he faces fighting for change
To take on police brutality cases time and time again, an attorney has to have a certain degree of fearlessness. Chris L. Stewart, a career-long legal advisor for families who’ve lost loved ones to police violence, is no stranger to the long haul.
Stewart, now the family attorney for George Floyd, whom Minneapolis police killed in May, shares his story with Momentum, Medium’s antiracism blog. He gets candid about taking the difficult cases that most attorneys would likely pass on—and the dangers surrounding them.
“I’m armed. I’m a second amendment believer. You just pass that information [about death threats] on to the authorities and have them handle it,” Stewart says. “I also travel with armed guards. It is what it is.”
