How About You Talk Some Sense Into Your Simple-Minded Relatives This Holiday Season
It’s on woke White folks to affect change during family time
So it seems that most Americans would rather gargle gravy or take a can of that cranberry shit to the head than have a conversation about politics.
In a new Quinnipiac University poll released on Monday, 66% of adults said that they are “hoping to avoid” conversations about politics at the dinner table on Thanksgiving. It’s a sentiment that spans political ideology, with 68% of Republicans, 66% of Democrats, and 69% of Independents saying they want to leave politics out of any conversations over dinner. The survey also found that most ultimately felt they didn’t have much to worry about, as 74% of Americans said heated political debates among family or friends were “not so likely” or “not likely at all.”
“A heaping serving of political back-and-forth with your cranberries and stuffing? No way, say Americans, who would far rather feast on the big meal than feud with each other on Turkey Day,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy.
For the record, it’s dressing not stuffing. But, to his point, while there is a whole subgenre of content dedicated to the topic online, as this survey and past ones like it illustrate, there aren’t rampant political debates being had over turkey legs across America. One can understand why people generally don’t want to talk about politics much less during a holiday in our second year of a plague.
However, I’m mainly not surprised by these numbers because never in my Black-ass life have I or any Negro I know spoken with Quinnipiac, Pew, or any of those pollsters. And of course “most Americans” don’t want to talk about politics at the dinner table; the majority of Americans are White. If there’s anything White people like to do collectively, it’s to avoid difficult conversations about touchy political matters.
Yet I wonder if this moment calls for some people to maybe speak up a bit more given the mess America is in and what factors largely contribute to it.
Regardless of background, I strongly encourage all of us to at least shut up any person…
