When my daughter was nine years old, she put on my older brother’s football helmet and Montreal Alouettes jersey, crouched into a three-point stance, and growled like she was about to make a tackle.

When she was 10, she did backflips and cartwheels in my mom’s driveway. Every time she learned a new move, she’d run inside and tell me to record her.

At 11, she picked up snails off the ground. She’d put them into bowls filled with dirt, mud, and a little bit of water and keep them outside.

She could’ve been an athlete or a scientist, and I would’ve been proud. But once she picked up a paintbrush at 12 years old, her journey into the arts began in earnest.

When I saw my daughter’s natural ability, I immediately signed her up for private lessons. She got her first taste of what it meant to be criticized. Her instructor once told her that one of her paintings wasn’t detailed enough; another time she challenged her to be more creative. It took some getting used to, but my daughter adapted and did well.

It feels like I’m learning as much as my daughter…
